The Strong Woman Myth: Why Being “So Strong” Can Leave You Tired, Isolated, and Stuck

Have you ever been told “you’re so strong” and felt a heavy weight drop in your chest instead of a sense of pride?

For so many women, being praised for handling everything has quietly turned from a compliment into an expectation—and eventually, a prison. If you are the person everyone depends on, the one who never falls apart and carries the emotional load for everyone else, you are not alone.

In this powerful episode of Thrive by The Rising Muse, host Naty Matos and Veda Green break down the “strong woman myth,” unpacking why hyper-independence develops, how it impacts your body, and how to finally give yourself permission to lay the heavy load down.

Why the “Strong Woman” Label Is a Trap

The strong woman myth doesn’t begin as a lie—it begins as survival.

Many women learned early on that vulnerability wasn’t safe. Maybe crying didn’t change anything, asking for support led to disappointment, or showing emotion got you shamed. So you adapted. You became composed, capable, and self-contained.

In trauma psychology, this is known as functional adaptation: becoming highly competent because your environment required it. The world praises that competence, but rarely asks what it cost you to build it.

The problem isn’t strength itself; it’s when strength becomes the only role you are allowed to play. You stop asking for help because it feels like failure. You end up looking fine on the outside while feeling completely alone inside—dependable, but not deeply known; admired, but not supported.

How Hyper-Independence Hijacks Your Nervous System

One of the clearest signs of this pattern is hyper-independence. It sounds noble—“I got this,” “I don’t need anybody,” “I’d rather do it myself.” But underneath that self-reliance is often a nervous system bracing for impact.

When care is inconsistent, your body makes a simple decision: It is safer to depend on myself. That strategy protects a child, but it isolates an adult.

Common signs you’re operating in hyper-independence:

  • Minimizing your own needs to prioritize everyone else
  • Rejecting help even when you are visibly exhausted
  • Feeling uncomfortable or anxious when someone tries to care for you
  • Living with light sleep, physical tension, and constant alertness

When you live like no one is coming to help, your body stays stuck in fight-or-flight mode. As Naty explores in the episode, rest feels foreign because your nervous system hasn’t learned that it is safe to put the armor down.

When Competence Turns Into Loneliness

In family and relationship systems, overfunctioning and underfunctioning work in pairs. When you consistently anticipate needs, fix problems, and absorb tension, everyone else unconsciously steps back. You end up becoming the “emotional adult” in every room.

In the episode, Naty shares a vivid image: a rowboat with two people. If one person does all the rowing, the other never learns to hold an oar. Over time, competence without reciprocity turns into deep loneliness and burnout. Control might soothe anxiety in the moment, but it suffocates real connection in the long run.

What Real Strength Actually Looks Like

We often confuse strength with self-erasure, but biblical and emotional maturity mean something very different.

Jesus was strong, yet He expressed deep sorrow, asked His friends for support, and wept openly. He never confused stoicism with faith. Scripture reminds us that power comes through Christ, not through isolated self-sufficiency.

Real strength looks like:

  • Letting someone see you without your armor
  • Admitting when you are tired without apologizing
  • Delegating without feeling guilty
  • Receiving support without feeling like you have to earn it

Admitting weakness isn’t failure—it’s the doorway to genuine intimacy, healing, and rest.

If you’re constantly running on empty, it’s not because you’re weak. It’s because you’re carrying a heavy, invisible load that society rarely calculates.

Unlocking the Secrets of OCD with Author Marin Canaday

In our latest episode of Thrive by The Rising Muse, we dive into an eye-opening conversation with Marin Canaday—an author, national volleyball champion, and someone who’s bravely battled OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) since childhood. Marin shares the deeply personal journey that led her to write My Little Monster, a children’s book that creatively illustrates the struggles of living with OCD through the metaphor of a “little monster.”

But this isn’t just any monster story—it’s a powerful exploration of the invisible battles that many face daily. Marin opens up about how her OCD shaped her identity, from her childhood experiences of compulsively confessing small mistakes to her adult struggles with terrifying obsessive thoughts. Yet, her story is one of hope, resilience, and the importance of seeking professional help.

In this episode, we explore key questions:

  • How did Marin’s OCD influence her life as a student and athlete?
  • What role does faith play in navigating mental health challenges?
  • Why is professional support crucial when managing OCD, and how can it make a difference?

Marin’s vulnerability and strength shine through as she discusses how she continues to manage her OCD and the vital role that both therapy and faith have played in her healing process. This is more than a story about overcoming OCD—it’s a testament to the power of resilience and finding purpose even in our darkest moments.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by anxiety, mental health challenges, or simply want to better understand the struggles of those with OCD, this episode is a must-listen. Marin’s journey is a reminder that while we all have our own “little monsters,” they don’t have to control our lives.

Marin Canaday grew up with obsessive-compulsive disorder from early childhood. However, she was
not formally diagnosed with OCD until her adult years. She found studying and sports helped her cope
with her OCD as a child. In adulthood, she continued to struggle with her anxiety disorder but had to
find new ways to cope as her athletic career and days of studying were behind her. Today, Marin writes
in her free time. She is the author of My Little Monster and The Very Best Me, children’s picture books
that describe her struggle with OCD. She writes to encourage children struggling with anxiety
disorder. To connect with Marin go to her website.

Tune in to hear Marin’s incredible story and learn how you, too, can face your own monsters with strength, faith, and the right support.

Unlocking Freedom: How Biblical Truths Impact Mental Health

As the 4th of July approaches, we often find ourselves reflecting on the concepts of liberty and independence that form the bedrock of our nation. But what if we told you that there’s a deeper level of freedom that can profoundly affect your mental well-being? In our latest episode of “Thrive by The Rising Muse,” we dive into the spiritual freedom presented in the Bible and its remarkable implications for mental health.

A Unique 4th of July Perspective

In this special episode, hosts Naty and Veda bring a refreshing take on what it means to be truly free. While fireworks and barbecues are wonderful traditions, the freedom that stems from spiritual liberation offers a sense of purpose, hope, and resilience that transcends our everyday experiences.

Biblical Narratives on Freedom

We journey through some of the most powerful stories in the Bible, starting with the Old Testament’s account of the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt. This tale of physical and spiritual liberation showcases God’s enduring commitment to freeing people from oppression. We also explore the Year of Jubilee, a time when debts were forgiven and slaves were freed, highlighting a divine mandate for economic and social justice.

In the New Testament, we delve into Paul’s writings, particularly Galatians 5:1, which speaks about the freedom found in Christ. This spiritual freedom, as emphasized by Jesus in John 8:36, transcends physical circumstances and liberates believers from the bondage of sin.

Freedom’s Impact on Mental Health

But how does this biblical concept of freedom translate into mental health benefits? Throughout the episode, Naty and Veda discuss:

  • A Sense of Purpose and Identity: Understanding your place and purpose through spiritual freedom can significantly boost self-esteem and reduce feelings of worthlessness.
  • Resilience and Coping Mechanisms: The promise of eternal life and the support of a faith community provide hope and resilience, essential for coping with life’s challenges.
  • Ethical and Moral Guidance: Biblical principles offer a moral compass, reducing internal conflict and stress by aligning actions with values.
  • Addressing Guilt and Shame: The belief in redemption through Christ provides a pathway to deal with guilt and shame, offering solace and a chance to start anew.

A Call to Reflect and Engage

As we celebrate this Independence Day, we encourage you to reflect on these timeless biblical truths and consider how they can transform your mental health. Whether you’re seeking support within a faith community or exploring these principles individually, the freedom offered by the Bible can lead to a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Don’t miss out on this enlightening episode. Tune in to “Thrive by The Rising Muse” and discover how true freedom comes from within. Share your thoughts, leave a comment, and join us in building a community where faith, family, and mental health thrive together.
