Juneteenth: A Journey of Faith, Resilience, and Freedom

June is a month of vibrant celebrations, and one of the most profound among them is Juneteenth. This year, our podcast, Thrive by The Rising Muse, is diving deep into this pivotal moment in American history. In our latest episode, we explore the layers of meaning behind Juneteenth, shedding light on its historical significance, its impact on mental health, and the unbreakable spirit of those who lived through it.

Imagine This…

Naty opens the episode with a powerful question: “Imagine waking up one morning to find out that you were free, but that news had been kept from you for years. How would you feel?” This sets the stage for a compelling narrative that many of us are only beginning to truly understand.

A Delayed Liberation

Veda follows up with the story of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that the Civil War was over and that all enslaved people were now free. This news came more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. Can you imagine the impact of such a delay on the lives and mental health of those who had been enslaved?

Faith as a Beacon of Hope

One of the most inspiring parts of the episode is how it delves into the role of faith. For many enslaved individuals, faith was a source of strength and hope. Practices like the creation of ‘hush harbors,’ secret meeting places for worship away from the watchful eyes of enslavers, provided a vital sense of solidarity and spiritual renewal.

Songs of Freedom

The use of spirituals is another powerful theme. These songs, such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Wade in the Water,” were more than just expressions of faith. They were coded messages of hope and resistance, serving as a covert way to communicate escape plans and maintain emotional well-being.

Stories of Resilience

The storytelling tradition among enslaved people is highlighted as well, with tales of biblical figures like Moses, who led his people to freedom, drawing direct parallels to their own hope for liberation. These narratives reinforced their faith and provided a powerful narrative of resistance and resilience.

A Call to Celebrate and Reflect

As we reflect on Juneteenth, Naty and Veda remind us to honor the strength of those who endured slavery and recognize the ongoing impact of this history on the present day. This episode is a call to educate ourselves, participate in local events, and support Black-owned businesses and organizations.

Unveiling Stories of Hope with Jacob Bowker

Mental health is a profound journey, often marked by challenges and revelations. In the latest episode of Thrive by The Rising Muse, we dive deep into this topic with a remarkable guest, Jacob Bowker. As a father of four boys, an author, a podcaster, and a certified mental health coach, Jacob brings a wealth of knowledge and personal experience to our conversation.

Jacob’s story is both moving and inspiring. When his son was hospitalized due to mental health issues, Jacob realized the dire need for faith-based resources for families struggling with similar challenges. This realization spurred the creation of Story Ministry, an organization dedicated to supporting families through the intersections of mental health, addiction, and faith.

Story Ministry’s unique family-centered approach aims to empower families, helping them establish healthy boundaries and become stronger together. Jacob emphasizes the importance of not neglecting any family member and working collectively to heal and support one another.

Jacob discusses how Story Ministry collaborates with licensed therapists to create resources that guide individuals through their mental health journeys. By incorporating Bible verses and faith-based teachings, they offer a holistic approach to coping and healing. Jacob’s perspective on the need for healthy coping mechanisms, as opposed to simply relying on medication, provides a refreshing take on mental health treatment.

A key aspect of Story Ministry’s mission is to proactively educate and support communities. Jacob highlights their efforts to integrate mental health education into schools, starting with teachers and staff. By equipping educators with the knowledge and tools to support students, they aim to foster a more understanding and supportive environment from a young age.

Story Ministry also partners with churches, offering weekly small groups and Bible study sessions focused on mental health. These groups provide a safe space for individuals to share their struggles and find support within their faith community.

Jacob’s message is clear: mental health is an integral part of our overall well-being and should not be separated from our spiritual lives. He encourages listeners to reach out for help, support one another, and approach mental health with empathy and understanding.

The Power of Hugs: Boost Your Health and Happiness

Did you know that there is a National Hugging Day? It’s a day dedicated to celebrating the warmth and comfort that hugs bring to our lives. It is celebrated on January 21st, but we decided to talk about it yesterday on our newest episode of Thrive. Hugs are more than just gestures of affection – they have a profound impact on both our mental and physical well-being.

The Origins of National Hugging Day

National Hugging Day was created by Pastor Kevin Zaborney in Clio, Ohio, with the simple yet powerful idea of encouraging people to share warm embraces with their loved ones more often. Since its inception in 1986, this holiday has gained recognition worldwide, highlighting the importance of human connection and touch in our lives.

The Science of Hugs: How They Benefit Your Health

Hugs aren’t just nice – they’re essential for our overall health and happiness. Here are some of the incredible benefits of hugs backed by science:

  1. Boosted Immunity: Hugs can enhance your immune system by stimulating the thymus gland, which plays a crucial role in immune function.
  2. Improved Heart Health: Hugs lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease by promoting relaxation.
  3. Pain Relief: The release of oxytocin during hugs acts as a natural painkiller, soothing aches and discomfort.
  4. Emotional Bonding: Hugging fosters emotional bonds and strengthens relationships, creating a sense of connection with others.
  5. Mood Enhancement: Hugs trigger the release of endorphins, those delightful “feel-good” chemicals that lift your mood and combat feelings of loneliness.
  6. Better Sleep: A comforting hug before bedtime can promote better sleep by relaxing your body and mind.

What Happens in Your Brain When You Hug Someone?

When you receive a hug, it triggers a cascade of neurochemical signals in your brain. These signals lead to a decrease in cortisol, the stress hormone, creating a sense of safety and calmness. Additionally, hugs stimulate the release of oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone,” which promotes emotional bonding and enhances feelings of trust and connection.

How Many Hugs Do You Need?

According to research, hugs aren’t just beneficial – they’re necessary for our well-being. To thrive in life, aim for at least four hugs a day for basic survival, eight hugs daily for emotional balance, and twelve hugs daily for personal growth and flourishing.

Tune in to the latest episode of the Thrive by the Rising Muse, to learn more about the science behind hugs and how you can incorporate more hugs into your daily life. Together, let’s embrace wellness and thrive!
