A few years into her engineering career, she decided to go back to school to get her MBA.

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, our thoughts often dictate our emotions, behaviors, and overall well-being. Negative thinking patterns, self-doubt, and internal struggles can weigh us down. However, Scripture reminds us that we have the power to renew our minds and experience healing, not only emotionally but also spiritually. If you’re seeking to transform your thoughts and walk a path of healing, here are some practical steps to get you started, backed by the timeless truths of the Bible.

1. Recognize and Acknowledge Your Thoughts

The first step to transforming your thoughts is to recognize them. What are the thoughts that dominate your mind? Are they uplifting, or are they pulling you into a cycle of negativity and despair? It’s important to be aware of your internal dialogue so that you can change what needs changing.

In Scripture, Paul advises us to take control of our thoughts:
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
2 Corinthians 10:5 (NIV)

By actively recognizing negative thoughts and holding them up to the truth of God’s Word, you can begin the process of transformation. Awareness is the foundation of change.

2. Renew Your Mind with the Word of God

The Bible provides powerful tools for renewing your mind. The Word of God acts as a mirror, reflecting the truth of who we are and the thoughts we should entertain. Immersing yourself in Scripture allows God’s truth to reshape your mental and spiritual patterns.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Romans 12:2 (NIV)

The renewal process involves replacing negative, harmful thoughts with positive, Christ-centered truths. This doesn’t happen overnight, but with consistent study and meditation on God’s promises, your thought life will begin to reflect His peace and wisdom.

Practical Tip:

  • Daily Bible Reading: Set aside time each day to read Scriptures related to peace, healing, and hope. Journaling these verses and reflecting on how they apply to your life can be incredibly powerful.

3. Speak Life Over Yourself

Our thoughts are often influenced by the words we speak. Negative self-talk can become a cycle of internal damage, while speaking words of life can transform how we view ourselves and our circumstances. Scripture emphasizes the power of the tongue in shaping our reality:

“The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.”
Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)

It’s not enough to simply think positively; speaking God’s truth over your life reinforces that mindset. Declare God’s promises over yourself daily.

Affirmation Exercise:

  • Affirmations Based on Scripture: Write down affirmations that are rooted in God’s Word. For example, if you’re struggling with fear, remind yourself, “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).

4. Guard Your Mind Against Negative Influences

The Bible teaches us to guard our hearts and minds because what we allow into them will shape our thoughts and actions. In a world where negativity is constantly broadcast, it’s essential to be selective about what we consume—whether it be media, conversations, or relationships.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

This means limiting exposure to toxic environments that fuel negative thoughts and embracing godly influences that encourage a spirit of love, joy, and peace. Consider the content you watch, listen to, and engage with.

Practical Tip:

  • Curate Your Content: Be intentional about what you read, listen to, and watch. Choose uplifting music, sermons, or podcasts that align with the transformation you are seeking in your thought life.

5. Practice Gratitude and Focus on the Good

Gratitude is a powerful antidote to negative thinking. When we intentionally focus on the blessings in our lives, our thoughts begin to shift from negativity to positivity. The Bible encourages us to dwell on what is good and praiseworthy:

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.”

Gratitude rewires your brain to see the good, even in challenging situations. By practicing this regularly, you can train your mind to default to positivity rather than dwelling on negativity.

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”

Learning to surrender control and trust God with the outcome can free your mind from the weight of constant worry. When anxiety starts to creep in, remind yourself that God is in control, and He is working everything for your good.

Practical Tip:

  • Prayer of Surrender: Begin your day with a prayer of surrender, laying your worries and fears before God. Trust Him to guide you and bring healing to every area of your life.

7. Seek Community and Support

Transformation and healing are not meant to be walked alone. The Bible highlights the importance of community in fostering growth and healing:

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

Find a community of believers who will encourage you, pray with you, and keep you accountable. Healing and transformation often happen in the context of supportive, loving relationships where others can help guide you back to truth when your thoughts wander.

Tanisha Bankston is a mother of 3 children from Grenada, Mississippi. She is a survivor of childhood abuse and domestic violence, and now an author and speaker. Tanisha was abused at the age of 5, leading her to lose her inner voice and withdraw into a shell for 27 years. She was taken from her mother, separated from her siblings, and adopted by her aunt. Despite feeling protected, she faced further challenges within the broken judicial system. Tanisha became a teen mom at 14 and again at 17. She rediscovered her inner voice on July 3, 2020, and found healing and deliverance from her pain and past on September 4, 2020. Tanisha wrote and self-published her book “My Pain is My Power” on May 21, 2021. She created a private support group for survivors called “I Believe You” on Facebook and founded the nonprofit organization I Believe You Inc. Tanisha launched her podcast, “My Pain is My Power Podcast,” on April 1, 2022, aiming to inspire others that they can overcome their challenges with hope.

Interview with Shaazia Terry: A Journey of Faith and Resilience

Today, we have the pleasure of introducing Shaazia Terry, a young Christian author who has turned her life’s trials into a testament of faith and resilience. Join us as we delve into Shaazia’s journey, from experiencing homelessness to becoming a beacon of hope through her writing and music.

Shaazia Terry’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Reflecting on what led her to become homeless, Shaazia shared, “Yeah, at the time, both my mom and I were homeless. I left my job, which led to our situation.” This challenging period in her life profoundly shaped her perspective on faith and life. “It taught me to depend on God. It strengthened my faith as He came through and provided for my needs,” she said.

Raised in the church, Shaazia always believed in God, but it wasn’t until a significant personal loss that her faith deepened. “I always believed in God and was raised in the church, but I never had a personal relationship with Him. That changed after my mom died,” she recounted. This pivotal moment inspired her to rededicate her life to God.

Shaazia has been writing stories and songs since she was 14 years old. After her mother’s death and subsequent healing, she felt a new calling. “After the Lord healed me following my mom’s death, I decided to change my writing to glorify Him and help others through my God-given gifts,” she explained. The themes of hope and encouragement permeate her work, as she aims to show that “with God, all things are possible.”

Her latest book, “God’s House,” embodies these themes. Shaazia provided some insights into what readers can expect: “Readers can expect to see through this story that even when you accept God’s call, life isn’t always easy. It shows love, family secrets, and most importantly, that God is what gets you through each trial and struggle. No one is perfect, and that’s why we need God and His guidance, no matter what challenges come our way.”

The impact of losing her mother is a recurring theme in Shaazia’s life and work. “My mother’s death changed me. It made me more forgiving and loving towards people. It showed me that I wasn’t putting God first and that I needed to always do so. As hard as her death was, I wouldn’t change it. Pain led to purpose and brought me closer to God in a way I had never been before,” she shared. This profound transformation has fueled her purpose and driven her to share her testimony on platforms like YouTube and Facebook, bringing hope through her music and stories.

When asked for advice for those facing similar hardships, Shaazia emphasized the importance of seeking God. “For those experiencing homelessness, I would say seek God, spend time with Him, read your word, and keep Him first. For those losing a loved one, it does get better. God will heal you and your heart, and it can be better than when the person was alive. Trust God, invite Him in; you don’t have to be alone. He wants to be there for you and take your pain away.”

Shaazia hopes her work will inspire others to never give up, especially in times of struggle. “I hope my work shows people to never give up, no matter what it looks like. When struggles come, hold closer to God. He can’t fail, and He is unbeatable. You can put your faith in Him,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey of faith and personal growth, Shaazia expressed gratitude for surrendering her life to God. “Looking back, I am so glad that I surrendered my life to Him and embraced the work He is doing in me. If not, I wouldn’t be who I am now,” she noted. A favorite scripture that has guided her is Genesis 50:20, where Joseph says, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today.”

In closing, Shaazia left our audience with a powerful message: “Never give up and always trust God. Give your gifts back to the One who gave them to you and make sure to always forgive.”

Navigating Life’s Transformations with Faith and Gratitude

Change is the only constant in life, an undeniable truth that shapes our journey in unpredictable ways. Some changes bring joy and fulfillment, like new relationships, homes, or jobs, while others, such as health issues or the loss of a loved one, can be painful and challenging to accept. Regardless of the nature of change, it leaves an indelible mark on our lives, and it’s crucial to recognize that it’s okay to take the time to process and grieve the losses associated with these shifts.

In my own life, I’ve encountered numerous changes, both positive and challenging. There were times when I wished I could seamlessly transition to the next chapter without acknowledging the impact of the change. However, the truth is that when a part of our world changes, it’s not only okay but necessary to pause, reflect on the lessons learned, grieve the loss, and then embrace the next phase.

Grief is a personal journey, and the pace of life may not always allow for an extended period of mourning. Yet, even amid new activities and responsibilities, it’s essential to carve out time to acknowledge and process our feelings. It’s important to choose wisely whom we share our grief with, as not everyone may be equipped to handle it. Journaling, prayer, and meditation can be powerful tools during times of change. Turning to our faith, we find solace in knowing that Jesus is always there to listen and comfort us. The scriptures offer guidance and assurance that, even in the face of change, we are not alone.

Interestingly, grief can accompany positive changes as well. Take the example of marriage—a joyous occasion that still requires adjustments. As someone accustomed to a solitary routine, sharing space with a life partner necessitated adapting to a new way of life. Even in moments of celebration, it’s okay to acknowledge and process the adjustments that come with change.

Consider professional advancements or finding your dream home. While these changes are undoubtedly positive, it doesn’t diminish the fact that you may grieve aspects of your previous situation. It’s not ungratefulness; it’s a natural part of the adjustment process.

In my personal journey, transitioning from a job I held for 18 years presented a significant challenge. Despite past experiences of being laid off and quickly finding my way back, this time was different. Accepting that the next opportunity might not mirror the past has been a profound adjustment.

While he is physically present, she mourns the loss of the relationship they once shared and the dreams she had for his future.
