Trusting God or Telling Him What to Do? A Heart Check for Believers

We say we trust God. We quote Proverbs 3:5–6:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”
But if we’re honest, many of us are doing more leaning on our understanding than we admit. We often try to sit in God’s chair, crafting our own plans, and then asking Him to rubber-stamp them with His blessing.

How often do our prayers sound less like surrender and more like strategy meetings?

“God, Let Me In on the Plan.”

Many of us live like we’re entitled to God’s full blueprint. We forget that faith, by definition, involves the unseen (Hebrews 11:1).
We say, “I trust You,” but then we beg for full disclosure:

“Lord, show me exactly what You’re doing, when You’re doing it, and how it will all turn out.”

But God doesn’t always offer that level of detail—not because He’s withholding, but because He’s cultivating trust. Isaiah 55:8–9 reminds us:
“‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’”

Faith doesn’t require all the details. It requires trust in the One who holds them.

“God, Let Me Take the Wheel.”

Sometimes, we take action first and pray later, when the consequences catch up. We might even spiritualize it:

“I’m stepping out in faith.”
But were we really? Or were we stepping out in impatience?

Abraham and Sarah tried to “help” God by orchestrating a plan to fulfill His promise through Hagar (Genesis 16). The result? Generational strife. God’s promises don’t need human manipulation. They need patient trust.

“God, Bless My Mess.”

Even when we’ve gone our own way, God is merciful. But how often do we expect Him to bless decisions made without Him?

James 4:13–15 cautions us against presumption:
“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city…’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow… Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.’”

Inviting God into our plans after they’ve failed isn’t the same as surrender. It’s triage. He may still redeem, but it’s far better to build with Him from the start.

Real Trust Looks Like Surrender

Trust is not passive—it’s deeply active. It looks like praying before deciding, seeking God’s heart before our own will, and obeying even when the path is unclear.

Psalm 37:5 puts it simply:
“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.”

Let’s stop trying to get God on board with our plans. Let’s get on board with His.

Praying Over Tithes and the Importance of Offering Beyond Tithes

Tithing and offering are powerful acts of worship that connect us to God’s provision and blessings. While tithing is a biblical principle, giving offerings above the tithe is an act of faith and generosity that brings even greater spiritual and material rewards. However, before we give, we must pray over our tithes and offerings, seeking God’s guidance, blessing, and purpose.

Tithing—giving 10% of our income—was established in the Old Testament as a way for God’s people to honor Him and support His work. In Malachi 3:10, God challenges His people to test Him in tithing:

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

Before giving our tithes, we should pray for:

  • A Grateful Heart – Acknowledge that everything we have comes from God (1 Chronicles 29:14).
  • Faith and Trust – Believe that God will supply all our needs (Philippians 4:19).
  • Blessings Over the Church and Its Mission – Pray that the resources will be used wisely for God’s kingdom.

When we pray over our tithe, we are not only obeying God’s command but also aligning our hearts with His will, trusting in His provision, and sowing into His kingdom with faith.

Offering: Giving Beyond the Tithe

While tithing is the foundation, the offering is an act of deeper generosity. Offerings are free-will gifts given beyond the tithe as an expression of love, gratitude, and faith in God. In 2 Corinthians 9:7, Paul encourages believers to give with a cheerful heart:

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”

Offerings are important because:

  • They Reflect the Condition of Our Heart – Giving generously shows our love for God and others (Luke 6:38).
  • They Unlock Greater Blessings – God promises to multiply what we sow (2 Corinthians 9:6-8).
  • They Support the Needs of the Church and Others – Offerings help missions, outreach programs, and those in need (Proverbs 19:17).

Giving beyond the tithe is an act of faith that says, “God, I trust You not just with 10%, but with everything I have.” When we give sacrificially, God honors our faith and provides abundantly.

Biblical Examples of Generous Giving

The Widow’s Offering

In Mark 12:41-44, Jesus praised a widow who gave two small coins, which was all she had. While others gave from their abundance, she gave sacrificially. This demonstrates that the value of an offering is not in its amount but in the heart behind it.

“Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

The Early Church’s Generosity

In Acts 2:44-45, the early Christians shared everything they had, ensuring no one was in need. Their selflessness strengthened the church and glorified God.

“All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.”

Praying Over Your Offerings

When giving an offering, it is important to pray for:

  • God’s Direction – Ask God how much to give and where to sow.
  • A Generous and Cheerful Heart – Pray against a spirit of reluctance or fear.
  • Multiplication of Your Seed – Believe that God will bless and increase what you sow.
  • Impact of Your Giving – Pray that your offering will bring transformation in people’s lives.

God’s Promises for Givers

Abundant Provision

In Luke 6:38, Jesus assures that giving leads to receiving:

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Prosperity and Overflow

In Proverbs 3:9-10, we are reminded that honoring God with our wealth leads to abundance:

“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.”

Conclusion

Both tithes and offerings are acts of worship, trust, and obedience. Praying over our giving ensures that our hearts are in the right place and that we align with God’s will. As we tithe faithfully and give offerings generously, we invite God’s blessings into our lives and participate in His greater purpose.

Being Loving, Kind, and Merciful: Does Not Mean I’m a Doormat

As followers of Christ, we are called to embody love, kindness, and mercy. These attributes reflect God’s character and demonstrate His grace to the world. However, those with a tender heart may face challenges, including being taken for granted or used. How can we balance showing mercy with guarding our hearts?

The Call to Love, Kindness, and Mercy

Jesus set the ultimate example of love, kindness, and mercy. In Matthew 5:7, He says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” Reflecting on the call to clothe ourselves with compassion, Colossians 3:12-14 reminds us: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another… And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Living this way reflects Christ’s love and draws others to Him. Yet, we must also walk in wisdom, as Jesus instructs in Matthew 10:16: “Be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.”

Avoiding Being Taken for Granted

  1. Set Healthy Boundaries: Loving others doesn’t mean allowing them to misuse your kindness. Jesus Himself set boundaries, withdrawing to pray and rest when needed (Luke 5:16). He invites us to find rest for our souls in Him, saying in Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
  2. Discern Motives: Pray for discernment to recognize when someone genuinely needs help versus taking advantage of your kindness. Philippians 1:9-10 says, “And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best.”
  3. Speak the Truth in Love: When necessary, confront those who misuse your kindness with gentleness and respect. Ephesians 4:15 urges us to speak the truth in love, ensuring we build others up. As Proverbs 27:6 states, “Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”
  4. Rely on God’s Strength: Acts of mercy must flow from God’s love, not human approval. Galatians 6:9 encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Depend on God’s Spirit, as Zechariah 4:6 reminds us, “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”

Trusting God as Your Defender

Even when others misunderstand or misuse your kindness, take heart in knowing that God sees your heart. Psalm 62:6 declares, “Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” Rest in His promise from Exodus 14:14: “The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Trust Him to vindicate you and provide the strength to continue loving others.

In all things, let Jesus’ words in John 13:34-35 guide you: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” As you navigate the balance of kindness and boundaries, let your actions glorify God, reflect His love, and steward the gifts He has entrusted to you.

Finding God’s Purpose in Seasons of Waiting

Waiting is one of life’s greatest challenges. Whether it’s waiting for a job, healing, a relationship, or clarity about the future, these seasons often feel unproductive, frustrating, and endless. Yet, the Bible reassures us that waiting is not wasted time—it’s an opportunity for growth, preparation, and deepening our faith.

God often uses these moments to shape us, strengthen us, and align us with His perfect plan. Let’s explore how we can embrace seasons of waiting with trust and purpose.

1. Biblical Examples of Waiting

The Bible is filled with stories of people who waited on God’s timing, often for years or even decades:

  • Abraham and Sarah waited 25 years for the promised son, Isaac, after God declared they would be parents.
  • Joseph endured 13 years of slavery and imprisonment before rising to power in Egypt and seeing his dreams fulfilled.
  • Hannah prayed fervently for a child and waited until God blessed her with Samuel, who became a great prophet.

In each of these stories, God was working behind the scenes, preparing these individuals for the fulfillment of His promises. Their waiting wasn’t passive—it was an active season of faith and trust. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)

2. Why Waiting Is Important

Seasons of waiting serve a purpose, even if we can’t see it in the moment. Here’s what God might be doing during this time:

  • Refining Your Character: Waiting can cultivate patience, humility, and perseverance.
  • Strengthening Your Faith: Trusting God during uncertainty deepens your relationship with Him.
  • Preparing You for the Next Step: Often, God uses waiting to equip us for what’s ahead, whether it’s a new role, responsibility, or blessing.

Seasons of waiting are not void of hope. God promises that He is with us every step of the way. Even in uncertainty, we can find peace knowing that His plans are for our good.

Encouragement:

  • Write down God’s promises and revisit them daily.
  • Surround yourself with a community of believers who can pray with and encourage you.
  • Reflect on past seasons where God showed His faithfulness.

“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

Final Thoughts: Waiting with Purpose

Waiting is never easy, but it is an essential part of God’s work in our lives. Instead of rushing through these seasons, let’s lean into them with faith, trusting that God’s plan is far greater than anything we could imagine.

If you find yourself in a season of waiting, know this: God is with you, He is for you, and He is working all things together for your good. Trust Him to bring beauty and purpose in His perfect time. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Shaazia Terry’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Reflecting on what led her to become homeless, Shaazia shared, “Yeah, at the time, both my mom and I were homeless. I left my job, which led to our situation.” This challenging period in her life profoundly shaped her perspective on faith and life. “It taught me to depend on God. It strengthened my faith as He came through and provided for my needs,” she said.

Raised in the church, Shaazia always believed in God, but it wasn’t until a significant personal loss that her faith deepened. “I always believed in God and was raised in the church, but I never had a personal relationship with Him. That changed after my mom died,” she recounted. This pivotal moment inspired her to rededicate her life to God.

Shaazia has been writing stories and songs since she was 14 years old. After her mother’s death and subsequent healing, she felt a new calling. “After the Lord healed me following my mom’s death, I decided to change my writing to glorify Him and help others through my God-given gifts,” she explained. The themes of hope and encouragement permeate her work, as she aims to show that “with God, all things are possible.”

Her latest book, “God’s House,” embodies these themes. Shaazia provided some insights into what readers can expect: “Readers can expect to see through this story that even when you accept God’s call, life isn’t always easy. It shows love, family secrets, and most importantly, that God is what gets you through each trial and struggle. No one is perfect, and that’s why we need God and His guidance, no matter what challenges come our way.”

The impact of losing her mother is a recurring theme in Shaazia’s life and work. “My mother’s death changed me. It made me more forgiving and loving towards people. It showed me that I wasn’t putting God first and that I needed to always do so. As hard as her death was, I wouldn’t change it. Pain led to purpose and brought me closer to God in a way I had never been before,” she shared. This profound transformation has fueled her purpose and driven her to share her testimony on platforms like YouTube and Facebook, bringing hope through her music and stories.

When asked for advice for those facing similar hardships, Shaazia emphasized the importance of seeking God. “For those experiencing homelessness, I would say seek God, spend time with Him, read your word, and keep Him first. For those losing a loved one, it does get better. God will heal you and your heart, and it can be better than when the person was alive. Trust God, invite Him in; you don’t have to be alone. He wants to be there for you and take your pain away.”

Shaazia hopes her work will inspire others to never give up, especially in times of struggle. “I hope my work shows people to never give up, no matter what it looks like. When struggles come, hold closer to God. He can’t fail, and He is unbeatable. You can put your faith in Him,” she said.

Reflecting on her journey of faith and personal growth, Shaazia expressed gratitude for surrendering her life to God. “Looking back, I am so glad that I surrendered my life to Him and embraced the work He is doing in me. If not, I wouldn’t be who I am now,” she noted. A favorite scripture that has guided her is Genesis 50:20, where Joseph says, “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today.”

In closing, Shaazia left our audience with a powerful message: “Never give up and always trust God. Give your gifts back to the One who gave them to you and make sure to always forgive.”

In the journey of faith, believers often find themselves grappling with the challenge of trusting God’s plan for their lives. The desire to know the outcome before taking the steps can be a stumbling block on this path of trust and obedience. Let’s explore the struggles, doubts, and the uplifting truth that lies in surrendering to God’s perfect plan.

As believers, we may doubt the signs placed before us, especially when they lead us to unfamiliar territories. Seeking assurance becomes a constant plea, even when God presents unmistakable billboards. Our human inclinations and discomfort may hinder our ability to wholly trust His plan. Yet, as followers of Jesus, we are called to close our eyes and let Him lead, even when the destination is unknown.

Drawing parallels from the Bible, we recall the story of Abraham and Isaac. When God instructed Abraham to sacrifice his son, Isaac questioned his father about the sacrificial lamb. Abraham, in faith, replied that God would provide. Similarly, we are called to follow God’s plan, trusting that He will open the right doors, close the necessary ones, and bring the right people into our lives.

Reflecting on our daily lives, we often trust mundane things with blind faith – the food we eat, the water we drink, the coffee prepared by someone else, or the Uber driver transporting us. These things can fail or not meet our standards, yet we trust them without question. It is a poignant reminder of our tendency to doubt the Creator of heaven and earth and HIS perfect plan for our lives, when he never fails.

God desires our trust. He orchestrates the details when we surrender our plans to Him. We must cease attempting to navigate life independently and embrace the peace that comes from following His divine blueprint. The journey may not be easy, but the burden is light when we align ourselves with God’s will.

I recognize the fear associated with stepping into the unknown. However, reflecting on past experiences where God provided, freed, and saved, serves as a testament to His unwavering love; I can’t but to trust.  It is a call to all of us to  relinquish control and allow Jesus to guide through His plan.

As we step into a new year, it’s an opportune moment to challenge ourselves to a higher level of trust in God. The message resonates as an encouragement to let go of self-driven agendas and embrace the divine path set by the Creator.

Trusting God’s plan requires faith, obedience, and a willingness to let go of our fears and doubts. The journey may be daunting, but the promise of divine guidance and a plan tailored by a loving Creator awaits. As believers, let us embark on this new year with a renewed commitment to trust God and allow His plan to unfold in our lives.
